Rwanda Bets on the Sky: Africa’s First Air-Taxi Takes Flight

On a clear morning in Rwanda’s capital, a sleek white drone lifted silently above the Kigali Convention Centre. It wasn’t a prototype—it was Africa’s first self-flying air taxi, a moment that could redefine how the continent moves.

The craft, the EHang EH216-S, is a fully electric, two-seat vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicle built by China’s EHang Holdings Limited. Working with the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority and China Road & Bridge Corporation, the government plans to create a “low-altitude economy”—a network of vertiports and data-driven air routes connecting urban and remote regions.

“Rwanda is showing that innovation doesn’t wait for perfect infrastructure,” said Infrastructure Minister Jimmy Gasore. The point, officials say, is not luxury—it’s access.

The EH216-S can travel about 30 kilometers per charge at 130 km/h. By 2026 or 2027, Rwanda hopes to begin limited commercial flights, starting around Kigali and later across key provinces. Roughly 30 vertiports are planned.

Challenges remain: safety certification, high costs, and public trust. Yet the symbolism is powerful. In a region long constrained by rough terrain and thin budgets, Rwanda is testing a new development model—one that rises above the ground entirely.
